You know, I sit at my desk at work for so many hours a week that it is really easy to forget that there is anything else in life. Lately, though, I have been daydreaming about canning fruits and vegetables, baking pies and cakes, and cleaning out closets. Maybe all this started when I changed the living room furniture. Maybe when I changed my chi I got a burst of energy to make things right. That could be.
The only other reason I can consider is that it is almost harvest time. I live in the city now, but I have always been near farms and farmland. Sussex County is one of the largest producers of soybeans and chickens in the world, and we aren't too shabby with corn, either. My family has always owned a farm, but in the past two generations it has shrunk down to the farmhouse (torn down and rebuilt), and 25 acres that we sharecrop. I think it may, quite literally, be in my genetic code to hunker down in preparation for the winter. To harvest, preserve, and prepare for the months without.
I listened last weekend to the wind rustling through the almost dry cornstalks and started to remember. I instinctively knew how much longer it would be for the corn to be ready for harvest, and I desperately wanted to be there when the harvest took place.
Fall is my favorite time of the year, and now I think I know why. It is when I feel my truest self, and my most connected to the Earth. And it's just around the corner!
Beautiful post. Funny, I grew up in the thick of the suburbs, and here I am picking and canning and longing for a garden of my own. It's not that I haven't had a garden, it's just been several years since then.
I think I'm getting the pre-autumn bug, too, that you write about here. I've been canning and making soups and really thinking and caring about food again, and I'm just itching to bake a loaf of bread....I might just have to get a starter going tonight since I can't buy a decent loaf of bread anywhere around here and I'm itching to make bruschetta with all the goodies from my friend's garden!
